Studied the authoritarian personality in Ss of diverse age, sex, and social and cultural environments to assess the variables of the rigidity of the original family role and the idealization of parents and self. To verify these variables and their relationship to authoritarianism, 72 Ss aged 18-28 yrs) were asked to write a self-description; tested by various standard tests; and extensively interviewed about sex roles, education, and parenting relationships. Results demonstrate that authoritative training and parental behavior have very little influence on determining the dogmatic attitudes of offspring. Dogmatism apparently does not result from direct transmission and is dependent on a variety of other cultural factors.
